In addition to True at First Light and Michael Reynolds' biography, Ernest Hemingway: The Final Years, these new, reissued and forthcoming books will be of interest to Hemingway aficionados this year.

  • Ernest Hemingway: An Illustrated Biography, by David Sandison (Chicago Review Press; $24.95). A thematic tour through Hemingway's life using some well-chosen, rarely seen photos.

  • Picturing Hemingway: A Writer in His Time, by Frederick Voss (Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery/Yale University Press; $35). A very visual catalog of an exhibit running this summer in Washington, D.C., including Hemingway in photos and paintings, as well as original book jackets and other memorabilia. Includes an essay by Michael Reynolds on "Hemingway as American Icon."

  • Ernest Hemingway A to Z: The Essential Reference to the Life and Work, by Charles M. Oliver (Facts on File, $50 hardcover; Checkmark Books/Facts on File, $17.95 paperback). An encyclopedia of Hemingway facts and reader's guide to all his works, with plot summaries and descriptions of characters, place names, phrases and numerous other things.

  • At the Hemingways, by Marcelline Hemingway Sanford (University of Idaho Press; $39.95). This new edition of the memoir by one of Ernest's sisters -- first published in 1961 -- includes the bonus of nearly 50 years of letters between them, most of which have never been published before. The letters include several that Hemingway wrote during his newspaper stint in Kansas City in 1917-18.

  • Everybody Was So Young: Gerald and Sara Murphy: A Lost Generation Love Story, by Amanda Vaill (Broadway Books; $15 paperback reissue). A portrait of a fascinating couple around whom many creative people orbited in the Paris and Riviera of the '20s and '30s.

  • The Hemingway Women, by Bernice Kert (Norton; $16.95 paperback). Reissue of a widely respected group biography of the wives and other women in Hemingway's life first published in 1983.

  • Papa Hemingway, by A.E. Hotchner (Carroll & Graf; $13.95 paperback). Reprint of the 1966 memoir by a noted Hemingway pal.

  • Hemingway vs. Fitzgerald: The Rise and Fall of a Literary Friendship, by Scott Donaldson (due in September from Overlook Press; $26.95). A fresh look at the writing duo from a noted scholar and biographer.

  • Bullfighting, Sport and Industry, by Ernest Hemingway (Meeker Publications, Sacramento, Calif; 916-448-0789). This limited-edition collectible (editions at $125 or $300) reprints an article by Hemingway originally published by Fortune magazine in March 1930.

    Fiction

  • The Paris Pilgrims, by Clancy Carlile (Carroll & Graf; $25). A novel that attempts to re-create Paris in the early 1920s as Hemingway, Pound, Joyce and others were beginning to make their mark.

  • The Crook Factory, by Dan Simmons (Avon; $24). A spy thriller loosely based on Hemingway's counterespionage activities against the Germans in Cuba and the Caribbean during World War II.

    On the Web

  • The Ernest Hemingway Foundation of Oak Park: hemingway.org/Hemingway/index.html. The site of the Hemingway birthplace and museum includes history and a good collection of links to other Hemingway sites.

  • The Ernest Hemingway Collection at the John F. Kennedy Library: www.cs.umb.edu/jfklibrary/hemingway_menu.html. A utilitarian site for serious students and scholars, but including a well-done biography and other materials.

  • Hemingway at The Kansas City Star: www.kcstar.com/hemingway/. A guide to Hemingway-related places in Kansas City plus audio clips of Hemingway readings and text of stories he wrote for this newspaper in 1917-18.
